Tips for improving reliablility of channel selection with PVRs etc.

As any user of the Pace Set-Top boxes will have discovered, they can be somewhat sluggish in responding to remote keypresses, and their response time can vary significantly, depending on what else the STB is doing at the time.

This can cause particular problems when you need to set a channel number without user interaction, for example when using automatic channel selection for recording programmes with VCRs, DVD recorders, TiVo, and PC based PVR systems (e.g. Windows XP Media Center Edition).

Where possible, set the time between digits as slow as possible - many PVRs etc, have a setting for this. The time between digits should be a minimum of 250 millisceconds.

Reliability has been reported to be better if the STB's now and next display is disabled. This can be done using Guide->Settings-> Display settings->Display Now and Next for->Off. Ensure you select Keep changes

If possible, set the channel change to occur a minute before or after the hour, as response has been reported to be less reliable around the hour. There is a lengthy discussion of this in this thread on the Tivo forum

If you are experiencing consistently unreliable channel number selection, it may be worth trying changing Red-Eye's IRDA code repeat setting - see ths page for details
